THE AFTERMATH. What if it wasn’t really what was supposed to happen? What if that prophecy, the one that Sybil Trelawney made back in 1981 was not meant to be about those that it was assume it was about?
"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches...Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies...and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not...and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives...."
—Prophecy made to Albus Dumbledore by Sybill Trelawney

What if it wasn't Harry and Voldemort that this prophecy was referring to… what f that was just the calming before the storm? What if there is an even bigger evil lurking about, gathering followers on a low key level and was getting ready to take the wizarding world by storm?

Sure Harry and Voldemort fell into that prophecy perfectly, but that was what was to be assumed. They assumed Voldemort was the one that was the Dark Lord referred in the prophecy and he had chosen Harry as his equal because he was the most logical choice as well as a half-blood the same as Voldemort. So imagine the surprise of the wizarding world when something new, something even more sinister, enters the wizarding world and causes more chaos than Voldemort and his Death Eaters ever did. So what will happen now? now that Harry Potter is no longer around to save the day should a new evil arise and try to conquer both the wizarding and Muggle worlds alike, what is to happen now?

THE WIZARDING WORLD, TWO THOUSAND TWENTY-FOUR. It has been just over twenty-five years since the fall of Voldemort and the wizarding world is finally about done picking itself back up and putting itself back together again. It’s a wonder that it took this long, though there was a lot of damage done and has still not completely healed. And how could it? Families had been ripped apart and friendships severed. Truths had been revealed and lies uncovered. The fear that has been instilled within the people has finally begun to diminish. Life, as everyone barely remembered, was returning back to normal. The Death Eaters have disappeared, most, if not all, in Azkaban or dead. There are still those that believe that only purebloods should learn magic; while there are so few of them left now, their beliefs have spilled over to those half-bloods and surprisingly even some Muggleborns that are of the darker nature and preference. And it has since become somewhat segregated in that sense for the wizarding world – well at least the British wizarding world – and Knockturn Alley, while once associated with the darker arts and such is now more of a ‘purebloods only’ sort of place – and the term pureblood is used loosely since most are not actually purebloods.

HOGWARTS. Has once again become the most prestigious wizarding school in the world; it has finally brought back a full staff of made some incredible changes at Hogwarts, taking it out of the Ministry’s control and once again giving the education that all witches and wizards, as well as some others, the proper magical education with some bit of fun on the side. Some additional classes are now being offered for those who wish to look into a few more electives besides the select few that have been offered for countless years. also now with even better and stronger protection charms, though they weren't too sure why they really needed them now, the school was once again bringing students of all sorts in to learn about magic and to prove themselves able and capable of using magic responsibly. All four houses are still sorted and there are still some that believe that magic should be for only those worthy enough to learn it, but their protests have since fallen on deaf ears.

In a world torn apart by war, survival is just another worry you want to live without. No one knows if their heart will still be beating tomorrow, let alone whether the world will ever return to peace. Supernatural creatures that the humans didn’t even know existed until a short time ago are battling for dominance over the world. But who’s to say they can’t work in harmony? The only way to find out is to live the life and survive to see the future. Will you help shape the world or will you crumble before the end?

There was advantage, Antehya decided, in being the sort of person whom nobody really notices. While it was lonely she found the silence and coolness of the school ballroom a perfect place to go when she had nothing to do and the rest of the school was hanging out with friends. She pushed the large door open, having to lean on it to make it budge, and made her way across to the piano, untouched save by her visits every now and again. Its stark black wood seemed to appeal to her, contrasted greatly by the keys, however dusty, their fine ivory brilliance tarnished by time and neglect.

Seated at this fine instrument Antehya would while away hours into the night without realising. Meals were not a problem - nobody knew that her friend Ana had never really left her for good - and there wasn't a soul in the school that knew how much she just didn't care about health or happiness anymore, or so she thought. Sometimes she would come down here at the ridiculous hour of three of four in the morning after no sleep and would stare out the grand French windows into the sky, resisting the urge not to simply slit open her wrists and let it all end there. Well, sometimes she resisted the urge.

This particular afternoon she played softly on those grand ivory keys, bird-thin fingers dancing over them in sensitive melody and harmony as she whiled away the hour with Chopin's nocturne in E minor, moving onto Ravel, Beethoven, Debussy, Chopin again and even her own compositions, each piece somehow weaving seamlessly into the next without rest. She wondered what the time was. She guessed most of the school would be finishing off dinner by this time, judging by the dark, and she tried to recollect the last time she sat in the dining hall at all. It was Thursday and so the last time would have been Monday morning when she ate that plum, its blood red juice staining her fingers giving her faint satisfaction that she could prove the food to be destructive in some way.

Her idea of perfection was three plums a week in summer, and two or three of something else in the other seasons. Winter she was allowed four because it was cold and that burnt off more than the summertime weather. The final chords of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata faded and she stood to approach the window of the ballroom. It was dark and so the room was a little fuzzy around the edges but Antehya wasn't prepared for the double images, spinning head and nauseous wave she felt come over her in an instant. She swayed and fell, her head cracking hard against the edge of the piano stood as gravity took control.

This was different to normal. Antehya was no stranger to dizziness of clautrophobia or lack of food, though she would never admit it. This sent strange pulsiung of blood through her head and heart, making her feel as it she would either vomit, pass out or be sent into cardiac arrest.

Her eyes tearing up she knelt and retched for a moment, hand over her mouth, while the world still spun around her. She could feel her heart beating erratically and her stomach churning, which eventually brought up bile into her mouth. Disgusted, she pulled herself up and sprinted to the window to spit it out, staggering as the dizziness tried to take control. She still felt sick and pulled herself up to the windowsill, heaving bile out the window into the bushes outside. She wiped her mouth and was horrified to discover her hand now tinged red, her malnourished brain vaguely recognising the taste of blood.

She wondered what she must look like. Bruise-like shadows beneath her eyes against her chalk white face, blood staining her hand and probably her mouth, eyes bloodshot from vomiting and all this, she decided, must have been the wretched plum. No more this week, the Voice in her head murmurs smoothly and slyly, for punishment. Deluded, she slipped to the floor with a slight bang as her protruding bones made contact with the dark and hard wood of the ballroom floor.
I'll try harder, Ana, even though it will be my downfall.

Her eyes fluttered closed, exhausted.

[What wait? See I didn’t even notice. Says more about me! xD]

The shrug and stumbling words said more to J than perhaps they ought. He knew not belonging even if she couldn’t say it. Did he see what she meant? Yes if what she meant was feeling the on the outside when surrounded by too many faces. Too many people, Too many thoughts; Well maybe that last one was just J. Either way J knew that the loneliest place was often a crowd. But he doubted this was Cate’s fumbled message. “Maybe you ought to explain? For my sake?” A sweet curve alighted the corner of his mouth and a dash of humour dripped gently into his voice. The tone was soft; almost coaxing. He wanted to know. That much was for certain.

Her laugh was nothing special to his scars. It was how he usually treated them. But her laugh was intriguing to him. Was she laughing at getting closer, or at him; and that perverse pride that made him oh so masculine to the eyes of many? Her next question he could almost for sure explain away as curiosity and not concern. Who would care for him? Who would care for the arrogant brat that lets lies role off his tongue as if they were the truth? A master of deception and mystery could never receive genuine affection from a sensible person. Common sense and J had never mixed well in the past. And Cate seemed in possession of a great deal of reality. A true sense of being down to earth. This was only his guess. And it wasn’t to be trusted blindly, much like himself. And the assumptions of his character. He required no definition. And it tended to avoid him, at all cost.

“I can’t really remember pain,” He’d taken a leap and now bared a part of him unknown to all but he and G. Why? He didn’t know. And decided not to think about it, probably for the better. “I don’t think so, all I really remember is the adrenaline and heat.” He paused looking at his fist as he clenched and unclenched it. He didn’t remember pain until the doctors had to examine it. Even then it was nothing but an annoyance just under his skin. A bloody irritating scratch that he couldn’t touch for the thick bandages then plastered over it. It was just heat. A furious heat that blazed through everything including himself. “The heat,” Another short pause as he looked away “it filled everything. The room. The air. … Me.” A small shrug as he fought back the memories before he turned to look at Cate. Waiting for her reaction to this part of him. This part that was afraid. Undoubtedly human.

As soon as he’d been real he returned to himself. Collected, calm and in control. He wished that wasn’t him and more often than not he was more but J was unfathomable even to himself. Too many things, too little patience to discover or accept them all together. He was a shambles of human being. Incomplete and he loathed it. But loved it at the same time. The constant race of not knowing what or who he was. And never quite being in control of it all. So he wasn’t Collected, calm and in control. He looked it. That was enough for most people. It had been enough these past eighteen years. Why should it stop now? He was just beginning to have some true fun with it.

“It’s better than more than half the school’s experience.” He looked at her with mystery spiralling in his eyes. A coy smile and a swift laugh falling from handsome jaws with deep vocals. “You should feel proud, privileged even. Don’t be thinking it’s dull. I bet you wouldn’t change it for the world.” He smiled warmly. He knew from his own personal experience that however much people complained and put down this school, their past or anything that actually made them who they were and shaped part of their whole persona, they wouldn’t change it for the world. He knew it because he did it. He moaned about his family, his life, his money, his friends, and this school but never would he want to change anything of it. That’s why he was perversely proud of his scars. They reminded him of this. They made him remember his past. And that night that brought him here. That gave him knowledge of a gift maybe not from a higher calling but with the power to give him freedom if he wanted it from all he supposedly loathed. And did. But he wasn’t going to change it.

“Of course you will. I’m not sure if you’d be allowed to leave if you didn’t.” He laughed at this sentiment. Would they, could they really hold you back if you didn’t master your gift. He supposed, depending on the element that they might keep an eye on you. And your degree. A 1st degree anything could have a real bad effect on the outside community if they didn’t master their gift. He laughed again in amusement to this thought. “It’s not that hard. And anyway I bet you’re just being modest.” He smiled charmingly at her. Flattery. Hmmm would it work? Or was he just playing to his predefined persona decided by the people who knew him least. Ooh this boy was a pessimist. And a darn good one at that. He could be deep and thoughtful whilst looking like he could charm the knickers of a catholic virgin. But they didn’t put up much of a fight!

Her intrigue at his words was curious but his was in too much of a confident mood now to let it bug him. He’d let that part seep back in (again) later tonight. Probably when alone or joining the gang with a couple shots of vodka. If there was any left. Playing into his part again. Pity Cate along with the others couldn’t see into his head. But then that would ruin the surprise and that’s just no fun for J. Nor for anyone else really.

He stopped only a step after Cate and turned to look at her before back at the school. They had come far. Far enough for tonight he thought. It was the same sight as always, nothing special to him. But he guessed differently for Cate. Perhaps this was the first time she’d seen it look like this. Majestic. Classic essentially. Fitting with its extraordinary pupils. A mixture of joy, luck and darkness. He’d never seen the similarities between the school and its contents. He wondered what made him see it now. Luck? A smile flitted for a fraction of a second onto his façade, invisible in the shadows.

He turned with a smile at her, knowing the tone in her voice. Understanding it he hoped. “You’re probably right. Some sleep is essential.” His voice held a smile as he looked at Cate. The shadows across her face very different from the first time he saw her. Showing a beauty that he hadn’t noticed before. Elegance.

He had a nice laugh, she decided. He seemed quite confusing; eloquent and polite but casual at the same time. Cate knew a lot of well-born people attended Ludus Elementum; people whose parents and grandparents had been taught by previous Magisters and who thought highly of their elements. Compared to them, Cate was a commoner, probably once part of some bloodline but now just a NYC girl who was lucky enough to have a special talent. After all she didn't choose her parents. Although, she was grateful; without her element she might have faded into the bustle of life and never been able to feel like she amounted to much despite her confidence and ambitious nature.

Fair enough. His reply was simple and accepting, something Cate gathered made up something of his personality, and his expression remained unreadable. At his next words, Cate smiled. "That is exactly right. Talking is what I do best anyway, I guess." Cate did tend to be quite chatty. It wasn't that she felt awkward without it, more that she always had some comment to make, some advice to give, or she just wanted to get to know people, and to feel like they knew something of her that they could take away with them and remember, even if it was just her random profound speculations that hardly meant anything at all.

As they reached the edge of the trees, Lys rubbed his eyes and Cate felt a little bit bad for dragging him out in the cold when he seemed rather weary. But he could have said no, right? And it would be nice to have some company and some help with the work she was always struggling with. Languages were the only thing she felt she could actually do well, and although she wished she could draw art would probably only ever amount to a hobby. "Thanks for helping me out," she said, trying to make sure he knew she was being genuine, "A lot of the time smart people are pretty annoying but I reckon you're alright." This was accompanied by a rueful grin as Cate settled herself on the ground and waited for Lys to join her.

It was true, she sometimes made a point of avoiding getting too friendly with clever people. After all, they were very sweet and told you you'd be fine but when the results came out all they did was made you feel dull. She was aware it was judgemental of her - smart people couldn't help it - but she hated the side of her that was jealous, the side that contradicted everything she lived for right now, and for that reason she steered clear of things that brought it out. It was the bit of her no one could work out who she'd inherited it from; probably her dad's Ignis ancestors.
