( IF ONE DRINK COULD MAKE)
tonight slip my mind, then I should drink up
SO I CAN FORGET THAT , I HAVEN'T LIVED MY LIFE
The beach. It was one of Cate's favourite hideouts, most of the time, whether or not she was on her own. In the summer, at the end of last year, when she'd finally began establishing herself among her friends and fellow students, she'd often been found here with them, sunbathing and paddling. The sea was always just a little too cold at this time of year though, and there was too much of a breeze to consider stripping off. Luckily at this time of year the sun wasn't strong to burn her though.
It was the first day of a new year. Or, a few days before the first day, Cate supposed. She'd arrived early because her parents had been starting work and didn't trust her on her own in the house during the day. That almost made it sound like she was suicidal, but in fact they were just paranoid that she was going to sneak off to some pothouse or something. In actual fact Cate liked to pretend to be a lot more bad-ass than she truly was. She got a secret little satisfaction out of aggravating her parents. She was glad to be back at Esperer, though; it meant not having to babysit her two younger brothers anymore. And in actual fact she had more freedom here than her parents probably realised. Lessons wouldn't start for another few days and until then early students were allowed to do whatever they liked, within reason. And that was why Cate found herself on an empty beach that morning.
The tide was all the way out and there was a great expanse of sand before her, smooth and untouched. Perhaps on a more energetic day Cate would have run through all of it just to mess up the perfection, but today she was tired from travel and too alone for her liking. She sat near the steps that led from the school grounds down to the beach, on the sand but not completely in it, afraid that it might damage her clothes. She wasn't wearing swimming gear. It wasn't that sort of beach day. It was just nice to hear the rush of the waves and feel the salty breeze, and wonder what the year ahead would hold. Perhaps she'd find a better rung on the social ladder. Or perhaps she'd be knocked off it altogether. The latter was unlikely, though. Looking out into the sea from the Cornish coast, Cate only had one thought; this was going to be a good year.
